Is YouTube down?

27 Aug

I’m blogging this morning, and everywhere I look, I see expanses of white space.  I check my Internet speed, and that’s fine.  I try opening a new window, just to visit YouTube, and that doesn’t work.  So either YouTube is down, or somehow, I am banned from YouTube – yes, must always allow possibility for a personal conspiracy theory.

Then I think of a potential salsa life without YouTube.  What has YouTube meant to me, and my salsa addiction?  Well, YouTube has fed it, of course.  YouTube has accelerated it, almost to the point of no return.  Run out of new moves?  Go to YouTube.  Want to learn some salsa history?  Go to YouTube.  Want to see how people social dance salsa in NYC, or elsewhere?  Go to YouTube.

I watch YouTube more than I watch tv.  Why is this?  Well, there is more salsa on YouTube than on tv.  There are no commercials on YouTube – After not watching tv for a month or two, try sitting through a day of tv and just feel yourself being burdened by the constant bombardment of tv advertising, to consume.  I am surprised that we, as consumers, even pay for tv anymore.

I am surprised that advertisers don’t go door-to-door and just offer to pay each of us to place a tv box in a prime location in our living rooms, for the sole purpose of displaying their advertising, for which privelege, they would pay us a monthly fee.  Hello, Mr. Smith?  I would like to pay you $20/ month – All you need to do is allow us to place this box in your living room, re-arrange all your furniture, so all the chairs are facing this box, and promise to keep the box electrified and turned-on, at least 8 hours and 11 minutes per day.  What?  No, that’s all.  Now let’s get started – here’s $20 for this month.

TV has turned marketing and advertising into an art.  I’m wondering when marketing and advertising on YouTube will catch-up, particularly for salsa vids.  There are some salsa vids that are like made-for-tv infomercials.  There are some salsa vids with ads, either just before or just after the clip, or with a watermark for a tv channel or website.

I’m waiting for that first YouTube vid showing an all-star salsero stopping mid-shine and reaching for a cool, thirst-quenching Gatorade, while wiping the sweat from his bare chest with his Nike-branded salsa towel; and just before returning to the dance floor, talcing the floor with a small bottle of Johnson’s Baby Powder.  Closing shot of him spinning his salsera baby into ecstasy, to the music of the latest salsa release.

Looks like YouTube is back up again.  Time to consume some more salsa vids.

Brilliant! I loved that fourth paragraph. In fact, I don’t watch TV much anymore because of all the rubbish they force feed us. So, until they start paying me, I’ll stick with YouTube, but from my end of the world (Japan), it’s still down as I write this. 😦
