Partner Selection (2).

7 May

I have been thinking about how Ladder Theory » applies to salsa partner selection ». Ladder Theory starts by stating that every time you meet someone, you give them a quick mental rating. This also applies when you meet someone in a salsa club, as described in the modified pie charts:

Rating System

Now, if you examine the charts closely, you will notice that the only real difference in these charts from the original charts is the substitution of ‘Salsa Skill’ for ‘Money/ Power’ in the Woman’s/ Salsera’s Rating System, as so:

Woman\'s Rating System

From a Salsera’s Point of View:
A salsera goes to a salsa club, primarily to get her “salsa fix”. Outside the salsa club, money and power are still important. However, inside the salsa club, a salsera is mainly interested in salsa skill.

Jane meets David in a salsa club
Jane sizes him up based on mostly salsa skill and attraction
Jane puts him on the ladder
Jane meets Conan in a salsa club
Jane sizes him up based on mostly salsa skill and attraction
Jane puts him on the ladder above David

You can recognize this has gone on because Jane says, “I’d like to dance salsa with David, but not as much as I want to dance salsa with Conan.”

From a Salsa Gigolo’s Point of View:
I’d like to say that a salsa gigolo also goes to a salsa club, primarily to get his salsa fix, but we all know deep down that this isn’t entirely true. Bachata fix, maybe. Salsa fix? Now, let’s be honest.

Bob Meets Joanna in a salsa club
Bob sizes her up based on mostly looks and the estimated chance she’ll put out quickly
Bob puts her on the ladder
Bob meets Jane in a salsa club
Bob sizes her up based on mostly looks and the estimated chance she’ll put out quickly
Bob puts her on the ladder above Joanna

You can recognize this has gone on because Bob says, “I’d like to dance bachata with Joanna, but not as much as I want to dance bachata with Jane.”

NB: There is a good correlation between bachata skill and the estimated chance that a salsera will put out quickly. However, there is no correlation between salsa skill and bachata skill, or salsa skill and the estimated chance that a salsera will put out quickly.

Feeling some righteous indignation? I think everyone has seen a seasoned salsa gigolo teach a cute beginner salsera on the dance floor, over the course of multiple songs. When was the last time you’ve seen a seasoned salsera teach a beginner salsa gigolo, who was not her boyfriend or husband? Multiple songs?

Construction of the Salsa Partner Ladder:
The salsa gigolo has one ladder, as per the classic Ladder Theory »:
The Salsa Gigolo's Ladder

The salsera, being a particularly complex breed of Woman, has not two, but three ladders:
The Salsera's Ladder

In addition to the grindchata (good) ladder and the friends ladder, the salsera has a third ladder — the salsa friends ladder. Salsa friends are those salsa gigolos whom a salsera will dance with, but may not necessarily call a ‘friend’ friend. A salsera will sometimes try to help a friend jump to the salsa friends ladder. A friend will go along with this, thinking he is jumping onto the good ladder, not knowing that he is merely jumping onto the salsa friends ladder, and likely somewhere close to the bottom of the ladder, in Beginner’s Hell.

Ladder Jumping Strategy:
Beginner’s Hell is as close to the Abyss as one can get, on the salsa friends ladder. The good thing about the salsa friends ladder is that a salsa gigolo can get higher-up on this ladder simply by gaining more salsa skill. The salsa friends ladder is also physically closer to the good ladder, so once a salsa gigolo gets high enough on the salsa friends ladder, there is a better chance of not falling into the Abyss, when trying to jump onto the good ladder. This is illustrated below:

Ladder Jumping

Here, we see Dallas, who is very high on the friends ladder, try to jump onto the good ladder. He fails, and falls into the Abyss. What he should have done, is try to jump onto the salsa friends ladder. He would have easily succeeded, and be where Arsenio is now, in Beginner’s Hell. Dallas should then pay his salsa dues in Beginner’s Hell, and be patient in gaining sufficient salsa skill to climb the salsa friends ladder, to about where Conan is now. Conan is very high on the salsa friends ladder, and as we see, when he jumps for the good ladder, he does not fall into the Abyss.
